TheatreWorks Opens its Closet: Colossal Sale of Bargains, Oddities, and Treasures

$0.25 - $500

Description

The TheatreWorks Costume and Props Department announced its Spring Surplus Sale to take place noon to 6pm, Friday May 4 and noon to 5pm, Saturday May 5, at 1100 Hamilton Court, Menlo Park. TheatreWorks will be purging its costume and props departments, and offering the public a chance to purchase a wide variety of items including cartloads of vintage trunks and luggage, hatboxes, kitchenware, glassware, furniture, artificial Christmas trees, antique books, men’s trousers and shirts of all types, women’s skirts and knits, vintage shoes, wedding dresses, and piles and piles of unclassifiable enigmas from the very depths of TheatreWorks’ 42-year-old hoard. Prices range from twenty-five cents for patterned teacups and other small items to a Baldwin Acrosonic spinet piano played live on stage in Clementine in the Lower 9 going for $500 or best offer.

Among the more eclectic items on offer are a three-foot tall Chinese dragon head made of papier maché/Styrofoam, suitable for wall-mounting; a treasure chest (empty); a box of gourds, and, most beguilingly, a six-foot circular flag that is Israeli on one side and Welsh on the other: “Nobody knows what this is or why we have it,” says TheatreWorks Properties Manager Sarah Lowe.

Coffee and baked goods will be available for purchase on Saturday while supplies last. Visa/Mastercard will be accepted for transactions over $20. All proceeds from the sale will benefit TheatreWorks’ annual operating fund, which supports future productions as well as outreach and education programs. For additional information, please email proprentals@theatreworks.org.

There will be a special industry-only preview for local theater companies and colleagues noon to 6pm, Thursday, May 3. This preview is open only to representatives and employees of Bay Area theater companies, nonprofits, and educational institutions.
